100,000 people in the US have Fragile X. Fragile X, the most common inherited form of intellectual disability and affects one in every 3500 males. Fragile X is a known genetic cause of autism. Individuals with Fragile X have learning problems, developmental delays, high rate of epilepsy and sensory problems. Research has shown that 15% to 33% of individuals with Fragile X carry a diagnosis of autism. Clips from documentaries such as Living With Fragile X provide an up close look at how the social and emotional lives of families are effected. Course objectives are:
Understand the genetics and inheritance link in Fragile X.
Identify the physical features of Fragile X e.g. epilepsy and and low muscle tone.
Identify the emotional and behavioral features of Fragile X. Identify current progress of research into drug treatments for Fragile X.
